Today we had our first proper get-together to chat about the trip - myself, Tomek, and Fernando S. Just three guys having lunch, drinking some red wine, and trying to figure out the logistics of what's coming up.

Diego couldn't make it. He's still in Zurich, stuck in his banker outfit (as you can see in the second photo), but you can tell from his eyes that his mind is already somewhere else. He's counting down the days until he can swap that office for the open road.

These three will be joining me later for Stage 3 of the trip - the stretch from Livingstone to Nampula. Paula, Raul, Vasco, and I kick things off in February, but Tomek and Diego will catch up with me on March 4th in Livingstone. Then Fernando S. joins the three of us in Lusaka on March 7th.

The planning session was pretty relaxed - no dramatic maps spread across the table, just Google Maps on our phones and Tomek's trusty Lonely Planet guide to Southern Africa from 2003 (yes, 2003!). We figured if the roads were there 23 years ago, they're probably still there now. Probably.

Tomek got assigned two important tasks: organizing the Zambezi River rafting tour for March 5th and finding us a day tour to Chobe on March 6th. We're trusting our Polish friend with this. The rafting discussion was entertaining - Tomek was very concerned about the difficulty level, insisting it should be "maximum a 5 out of 10, whatever that means." But when I mentioned that Paula would be doing it too and she doesn't care about difficulty levels, he suddenly got a bit embarrassed and manned up. Classic.

Fernando S. was quite surprised when we mentioned bringing our running shoes. He's more of an upper body athlete - specifically, bicep work, primarily focused on lifting his glass. A very disciplined training regime.

The lunch ended with an unexpected twist - Tomek swooped in and paid the bill before we could even reach for our wallets. I can already foresee some serious fights over bills during the trip. Maybe we should download Splitwise now, before things get ugly.

It's not about being adventurous or brave - we're just a bunch of people who want to enjoy life and have some fun. Three weeks until I start, and about six weeks until these guys join me.

Looking forward to it.

My next stop: Maputo, Mozambique - February 14th, 2026
Stage 3 crew reunion: Livingstone & Lusaka - March 4th & 7th, 2026
Tomek's assignments: Zambezi rafting (March 5th) & Chobe tour (March 6th) - No pressure!
