Phomola → Sun City — The Long Day

Phomola → Sun City — O Dia Longo

📍 Sun City, South Africa

Google Maps said 7h50. It took 9h30. But who's counting?

The day started early in Phomola with a proper breakfast cooked by me, scrambled eggs, beans, sausage. Real fuel for what lay ahead. The boys ate everything without complaining, which is already a win.

We hit the road aiming to reach Sun City before dark. Google's estimate was optimistic, as usual. The road was under construction every 20 kilometres, which meant constantly slowing down, waiting, starting again, repeat. The scenery, at least, was beautiful, savanna stretching to the horizon, enormous sky, those solitary trees that look like someone placed them there on purpose.

To kill time, we played several games. The favourite was "Yes or No", solving mysteries with yes-or-no questions. For anyone who wants to try: [yesnogame.net/en/scary](https://yesnogame.net/en/scary). It works surprisingly well for long drives.

Halfway through, we stopped at a service area to refuel the car and our stomachs. KFC, approved by Raul who even left a Google review. At the same stop, we found Paula's favourite chocolate, Cadbury Dairy Milk Mint Crisp. We decided to bring it along. It was melted within ten minutes. African perspectives.

The end of the day brought us dirt roads and zero internet. I was slightly worried. They loved it, because they got to sit on the car windows, hanging off the Toyota's roof rack. Perspectives, once again.

We celebrated passing the 1,000-kilometre mark on the trip meter. A symbolic milestone that deserved a photo.

Arriving at Sun City, the reaction was unanimous: "We're staying here another night, this place is awesome." Done. We'll relax here tomorrow and drop one night from Kang. We had a proper dinner with colourful cocktails, and there was still time for some trampoline jumps.

They passed the "long road day" test with flying colours. I didn't quite, I'm completely wrecked. And secretly, I was hoping they'd want to stay an extra day at Sun City.
