Back to Chobe

De Volta ao Chobe

📍 Kasane, Botswana

Today was the day to go back to Chobe, in Botswana, departure at 7 in the morning. Paula stayed behind to work remotely.

I was not driving, which was good, and we had the chance to chat with David, the driver, during the journey to the border.

The morning safari was by car. The area we covered, which is just one part of the park, runs along the river and is full of wildlife. The roads are dirt tracks, but what surprised me most is that the safari vehicles have a freedom to go off-road into the bush that you simply do not find in other parks.

We saw plenty of elephants, but the highlight was a group of lions hiding under dense vegetation. The view was not great at all, but I was fine with that, I did not expect eight safari vehicles to push through the bush so we could get a better look. It was a mix of satisfaction at being side by side with resting lions, and at the same time the feeling that we were invading their space in an ecosystem where we should only be observers.

We went back to Kasane for the afternoon boat cruise. I had done it before with Paula, the novelty this time was seeing elephants from the water. She would have loved it, but apparently she had a sustainability report to read.

We got back early, and Paula had been in charge of choosing the restaurant. We wanted something more local and less "posh" than the night before. She chose Zest. Great choice, local music, local food.

For starters we ordered something with crocodile and something we did not recognise. We wanted to try different flavours: they were worms. I did not try them.

Tomek was the only one who ate them. He was not a fan. We apologised and left them.

After that we went for a drink at Limpo's Bar. We had been told it was even better than Vixs, but after Tomek's performance the night before, we were surely going to be turned away.

It did not disappoint. More people, bigger, livelier. As soon as we walked in, we came face to face with Friday, our lifeguard from the rafting the day before, who was so surprised and excited to see us there that he did not leave our side. Which was fine by us: good company.

We danced, had that drink, maybe two, and headed back to the hotel while Limpo's was still warming up.
