Lusaka → Katete — Fernando Arrived, Benfica Played, and Tiko Lodge Surprised Us

Lusaka → Katete — O Fernando Chegou, o Benfica Jogou e o Tiko Lodge Surpreendeu

📍 Katete, Zambia

Fernando S. was only arriving at 12:10, so the morning was spent in Lusaka.

I took the chance to go to the barber, I needed it. Tomek went for a run. I remembered the trainers I brought that have not left the boot of the car once.

At the barber, the beard went well; the hair, not so much.

Message from Fernando: "We left slightly late, estimated arrival 12:48." Doing eight hours to Chipata was going to be tight.

We needed a plan B. On Google Maps we found a town called Katete, about an hour from Chipata, with a place to stay, Tiko Lodge. We did not know yet, at that point, that both Tiko Lodge and Katete would be memorable and earn a special place in our trip.

We booked Tiko Lodge, six euros per room. We sent a message on WhatsApp and via Booking saying we should arrive around 20:30 and asking if they served dinner. They replied asking how many we were and what we wanted to eat. We asked if steak was possible, and we did not hear back.

Diego and I went to the arrivals at Kenneth Kaunda Airport; Tomek stayed asleep in the car. Running takes it out of you.

Fresh and cheerful, Fernando arrived, he did not look like someone who had just circled Africa in 36 hours: Lisbon–Luanda–Johannesburg–Nairobi–Lusaka. All because an Airlink flight was cancelled and this was the only way to be in Lusaka in time.

We dressed properly because Benfica was playing tonight.

When we left we realised we were going to have a couple of hours of night driving, but there was no other option.

The landscape changed dramatically an hour after leaving Lusaka. Mountains appeared and we climbed to 1,100 metres.

For the first time on this trip we paid a bribe to a traffic officer who insisted I was doing 63 km/h, not 40. The choice was pay or go back to the station to contest it. We paid. 200 kwacha, ten euros.

Along the way, at checkpoints, toll booths and the like, several people spotted our kit and immediately said "José Mourinho."

We had received no reply to our dinner request from Tiko Lodge and were gradually realising that the town of Katete could not have many alternatives. Just in case, we kept buying bananas along the road.

We arrived in Katete at 20:40. We were welcomed by Agnes and Andro. Agnes, the older one, does not speak English; Andro translates because she is the boss.

She told us there was no steak, but there was chicken. "How long will it take?", "It's ready!" Wonderful.

A piece of chicken each, some white rice, and vegetables. It was better than it looked.

The signal was still very patchy and, obviously, Tiko Lodge had no WiFi. No pool either, no spa, no gym. For six euros a room, if it had a bed it was already not bad.

Without internet it was hard to follow the match, so we headed to our rooms.

Tiko Lodge is a community project with a great deal of merit, built with a lot of love. Sixty-one people work there, Andro said with pride.

"When do we pay?" I asked. "At 4:30 in the morning, when the director wakes up." OK.

As for the rooms, let us say humble, but perfectly adequate for recharging and for laughing out loud at the comments from Diego and Tomek, who had booked the Protea by Marriott in Chipata because they were gold members. "Paula got off lightly," said Diego.

The photos do show that Fernando and Diego were given towels from the "Coimbra dos Pequeninos" collection, though it made no difference, since neither of them showered: the water was too yellow and cold at six in the morning.

We fell asleep and woke up not knowing how Benfica had got on, so, for that reason, and also because we had not showered, we decided to keep the kit on for the next day. But that is another story.
