Gorongosa → Tofo — Flooded Rivers, Guess the Hitchhiker, and Moisés's Beer

Gorongosa → Tofo — Rios cheios, o Guess e a 2M do Moisés

📍 Tofo Beach, Mozambique

We were supposed to leave Gorongosa at 6:00, but, and there have been many "buts" in Mozambique, a tree had fallen on the only track that allows you to exit the park, and the rivers had risen too high. There was no way in or out.

We even tried to reach the fallen tree, but without success. The only result was losing the rivets from the front and side bumpers.

Fortunately, the park has a panel beater who fixed everything like new while we waited for news from the team that had gone to cut the tree.

At 10 in the morning came the news we and others who had planned to leave had been waiting for. The tree was no longer a problem, but the river levels had risen even further.

All the other cars were taller Land Cruisers. When I asked if they thought mine would make it through, they looked and hesitated. That hesitation didn't give us much confidence.

But Tofo was calling us, even though we knew we'd arrive very late.

We followed one of the park's Land Cruisers, hoping it would know where to "step" when crossing the rivers.

Everything went well, despite some anxious moments, especially when the water level rose above the windows and I felt the car wanting to float. But it behaved beautifully and never lost contact with the ground.

We had a humble celebration when we reached National Road 1, humble because the EN1 has taught us not to celebrate prematurely.

Up to the Save River the road was a punishment, just as it had been on the day we drove from Nicoadala to Gorongosa. After that it improved.

We gave a lift to Guess, a truck driver who had run out of fuel and had to go buy some at a nearby village. I started the conversation with "this road, man, how is this possible?", I didn't need to say more, Guess unrolled his entire catalogue of complaints about FRELIMO and the government. We said goodbye with an "Anamalala!".

We arrived in Tofo at 23:20. I had finally managed to book one of the houses next to the market, right on the sand. Even though it was late, we still went for a 2M at Moisés's shack.

Tomorrow it's us going into the water, the car stays on dry land.
